Q&A

Have previous privatization contracts helped or hindered RTD riders and taxpayers? Should RTD expand those programs?
I am honestly not aware (as of today) of the stats of privatization contracts, as to the value of any assistance rendered. Unfortunately, I have been unable to completely research data such as that, but once in office, I will know and react to the information. On the surface, it sounds like such concepts would be beneficial to both RTD riders and taxpayers, and if expansion of existing contracts, or creation of new ones is the right direction to take, I will pursue such directions.

What makes you most qualified for a seat on the RTD board?
First, I believe my past experience in the Air Force, both in Vietnam as an intelligence data analyst with HQ, Seventh Air Force, and later, while serving 18 years in the Air Force Reserve and retiring from the Chief of Transportation slot will serve me well. I became familiar with factors that I anticipate will be similar to those involved in performing at high levels of proficiency as the RTD Board member for District F. In addition, I have served in many various people oriented areas of business for most of my adult life. I have served in many volunteer capacities, both in and out of the City of Aurora, and have received more than one “Volunteer of the Year” award. I am a dedicated individual that normally gives more than is expected of him! At 67 years of experience, I don’t anticipate doing any less for the next 43 years! I plan to live to 110 years of age, and plan on working through at least 87 of those years! I think mature adults have a huge advantage, based on past experiences, and a good memory to recall from lessons previously learned.

Do plans for RTD’s FasTracks light-rail stations in Aurora provide adequate parking? If not, how should that be resolved?
As briefed in the two public assemblies so far in Aurora, the 2004 parking originally authorized was only 1800, and now the current estimate and plans call for 3300, if I’m correct. Obviously we have to look into vertical stacked parking as a possible alternative, as well as maximizing the usage of land already in the planning stages. I will want to see some sort of priority system in use to determine what priority should get the most attention and monies.

At this point, what direction should RTD take to ensure the fastest, best way to implement the FasTracks program?
I am aware that RTD is being awarded their third national excellence award this week, and I would like to find out what the criteria is for the awarding of this award. It sounds like RTD is on the right track (no pun intended!). There are a total of 15 board members, and this RTD system is funded by tax dollars, and every district of approximately 165,000 soles deserves consideration. However, by determining all factors, not just a few, we should determine what emphasis should be given first, second, etc. I believe that due to D.I.A. and the Fitzsimons complex being such large economic engines, the I-225 FasTracks portion deserves a very high emphasis, and should be completed ahead of lower emphasis phases of the entire system. The believe the Denver Metro area is growing most rapidly in the eastern and southern directions, and therefore deserves a higher emphasis, and I will do my level best to see that this emphasis is given!

Should the RTD board lower the thresholds for cutting unpopular RTD lines?
I don’t know enough about the other districts at this point, to give an opinion as to which lines should be less emphasized, and therefore possibly delayed, but once in office, I will become very familiar with that data, and I will stand up for the right and fair decisions that will have to be made. I like the public meetings that have been conducted so far in Aurora, and I think that system of input is valid and useful in formulating such important future decisions.

Would you support cutting less popular lines to increase frequency on more popular lines?
No answer.

How often do you ride RTD buses or trains?
I have ridden the Light Rail system downtown from the 9 Mile Station, and have had recent experience riding the 15L bus from Aurora to 16th/Market. Once I decided to become a RTD board member, I have taken multiple opportunities to both ride the bus, and speak with the passengers and drivers, asking their opinions of the system. It has been very interesting. One retired driver told me that he thought each and every director should have to attend a 2 week drivers course, and as a retired Air Force chief of transportation, I agree. Once you experience the “feeling” of large equipment, it’s hard to believe how it changes your outlook. I’m not sure that a full “drivers” course is necessary, but I do agree that an “intense familiarization course” would be of great benefit!

What things should RTD do to boost ridership?
No answer.

Has the Call-n-Ride program been a boon or a boondoggle?
I believe that I have already addressed the “priorities” question, but again, due to the shortage of time and familiarization with the “Call-n-Ride” system, I am currently unable to comment, other than to say that the folks at Heather Gardens want better service from that portion of RTD.

What priorities would you have as an RTD board director?
No answer.

Who is your hero?
One of my heroes is Sarah Palin! I support aggressive persons with a positive, informed, community oriented vision, and the willingness to pursue such directions. I think the positive effect of women in government is overdue.

Are you a dog or a cat person?
I have had cats and dogs in my past life, and if I have to choose, I would say I’m a dog person. Currently, I don’t have room for a dog, but I think about getting one.

What food do you hate most?
No answer.

My next 3 books to read are - THE SECRET by Rhonda Byrne - WILD AT HEART by John Eldredge - AS A MAN THINKETH by James Allen

The person I would like to see run for U.S. President would be Colin Powell!

I am most proud of the accomplishment of finishing the procurement of the Fitzsimons General’s Park “oval piece of ground” that will eventually be used to place our Fitzsimons Veterans Memorial!
