Q&A
What makes you more qualified than your opponent?
My opponent and I have both had experience in government, but I feel that our view of policy is what separates us. The Secretary of State’s view on the issues is extremely narrow and driven by pedantic political doctrine. He sees silver bullets as answers while I believe that we have complicated challenges that have myriad answers. In addition, I feel that having a background in engineering is going to be a great asset as many of this nation’s challenges have technological solutions.

Would you support an expanded guest worker program and how would it work?
I would support an expanded guest worker program - provided that securing our borders is our primary focus. I think any program that will allow participation while guaranteeing our safety would be logical.

Should Congress permit increased offshore drilling? In the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?
I’m certainly not against responsible exploration and drilling. The problem is that while drilling is one solution, the challenge requires a multitude of answers. Solar, wind, increasing automobile mileage standards, conservation, hybrids, and above all, bio-fuels, are all answers to this problem that we have to implement.

Should Congress provide the requested $50 billion in low-cost loans to the auto industry for retooling and development of fuel-efficient cars?
We are at a point in this crisis that the public and private sectors have to do everything in their power, and in partnership, to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.  In doing so, we keep our economy moving, protect our families, and ensure our nation’s security by establishing energy independence.

What’s your assessment of recent Supreme Court picks Samuel Alito and John Roberts?
The Supreme Court’s initial intent was, and still is, to review the constitutionality of our laws. In that light, Supreme Court Justices are appointed and confirmed as part of the check-and-balance system built into our Constitution and our government.  They should not represent partisan politics or legislate from the bench.

Does the American health care system need tweaking or an overhaul? What would you advise the next administration to do?
We need an increased level of oversight and testing for everything coming into the United States. Many foreign countries do not have the same diligence we have in monitoring the goods and services that they export. As children are particularly at risk in this situation, it is imperative that we increase our vigilance here at home.

Should the U.S. government make it more difficult for American businesses to “outsource” jobs?
Absolutely! We need to economically reward those businesses that keep jobs here.

How would you reform the Department of Education or would you recommend Congress abolish it?
The first thing we need to change is the belief that all children will benefit from the same programs and testing. Our children are not generic, we should not treat them as such. We must increase funding for infrastructure - crumbling schools can no longer be a distraction to our children’s education. We need to properly fund the programs we establish instead of initiating them, promoting them for political gain, and then failing to fund them.

Do you support a constitutional amendment to bar homosexual marriage? Why?
No, the intent of the Constitution is to guarantee freedoms, not to take them away.
